Summer of Tech

2023 Pricing Update

We have some changes happening with our pricing this year, affecting employers joining our programme for 2023. Summer of Tech will always be free for students and graduates.

As a not-for-profit, please know we are doing this only so we can continue to do the mahi we love to do - helping you find incredible juniors to bring into your teams, and helping candidates get work-ready. We know that a price increase is never ideal and work to avoid one whenever we can.

Annual registration fees remain the same: $500+GST gets you “in” the Summer of Tech programme until 31 December. This includes unlimited job listings on our platform, attendance at all our recruitment events, full access to candidate profiles and support from our team.

Intern placement fees are increasing this year:

  • For small employers (organisations with 49 or fewer staff based in Aotearoa, New Zealand), we are increasing from $1,000+GST per placement to $1,200+GST per intern placement.

  • For large employers (organisations with 50 or more staff based in Aotearoa, New Zealand), we are increasing from $2000+GST per placement to $2,400+GST per intern placement.

(Note this “Intern” fee covers all candidates hired through our programme for less than 9 months contract, regardless of whether they’re full-time/part-time / “internships” or contract roles).

Graduate placement fees are becoming a new thing this year:

  • For small employers, contracts over 9 months will be $2,400+ GST per placement.

  • For large employers, contracts over 9 months will be $4,800+GST per placement.

(Note this “Graduate” fee covers all candidates hired through our programme for more than 9 months contract, regardless of whether they’ve completed their studies already or not).

These prices fairly reflect our value and are highly competitive compared with other options for hiring tech interns and graduates in Aotearoa. We will save you time, connect you with talented candidates, and streamline your recruitment process.

Please get in touch with us if you have questions, feedback or suggestions about our price increases.

Join me in a brief walk down memory lane; the year is 2015 when Summer of Tech grew from 1 to nearly 2 employees and kicked off our Auckland programme after a successful 2014 pilot.

What were you doing in 2015? I’d recently quit my day job, took a leap of faith and decided to make my “side project” a full-time gig. That “side project” was Summer of Tech. I was excited to work with a passionate bunch of people kick-starting tech careers in Aotearoa. We had our first person on the ground in Auckland and were ready to scale!

Eight years later, I’m thrilled to be in approximately the same role with a bigger team, kick-starting hundreds more tech careers in Aotearoa.

2015 was the year we took a deep breath and increased our placement fees to $1,250. What felt like a huge decision at the time turned out ok. We increased placements by 50% on the previous year, and employers felt like they were getting good value. Hey, we managed to cover our costs, too! As always, we relied on our community of passionate volunteers and mentors and had a growing alumni base. We’ve been learning, improving and evolving our approach to tech internships since 2006.

Flash forward to 2020, and after feedback from employers we decided to change to a tiered placement fee, with smaller employers (organisations with 50 or fewer staff based in Aotearoa, New Zealand) dropping to $1,000 per successful hire. Larger employers (organisations with 51 or more staff based in Aotearoa, New Zealand) increasing to $2,000.

At the end of 2022, we took another deep breath and looked at the economy, the value we’re offering, and the lay of the recruitment market in the Aotearoa tech industry and decided it was time to review our fees again. We have some exciting ideas about adding more value and supporting our tech industry to continuously improve the way we grow and retain local talent. We’ll share more about these plans in a few weeks.

For you economist geeks out there, according to COLA (Cost of Living Calculator), your 2015 NZD$1,250 Summer of Tech placement fee is worth $1,666.06 in 2023 money. So if you’re a smaller organisation in Aotearoa right now, Summer of Tech offers EXTREMELY good value for hiring interns. Not only are our costs less than they were in 2015, less than the 2023 COLA-adjusted amount, but the service and support we now offer are beyond our wildest 8-years-ago dreams.
