Alumni Story - Joseph Whyle
Why is it important to put your time and work into the Summer of Tech programme?
Joseph Whyle, Summer of Tech Alumni, Mentor and Senior Technology Experience (TX) Engineer at Sharesies, shares why.
What are the common challenges you see students trying to find jobs in the tech space?
One of the biggest challenges is recognising that everyone has the ability to nail it and get into an internship program.
That Summer of Tech requires putting in the time and effort... attend workshops, training for Meet & Greets, ensure you research about companies and areas you want to move into.
How do you advise them to overcome those challenges?
When it does get overwhelming, reach out and chat with someone. If you are struggling with Meet & Greet or interviews, then practice with your friends. This will help build confidence and also self-belief.
Summer of Tech requires giving up some of your time and perfecting your CV/Profile. I have always said to treat it like a uni/polytech paper. Dedicate the time to it and keep on top of making sure you sign up for workshops. Get advice from the Summer of Tech crew!
My story about overcoming challenges:
I was presenting with a few others at a Summer of Tech workshop, and a student had a chat with me. They asked how I got an internship at Xero, and I told them my story. I said if you want to do it, you can. Use your passion and confidence to drive you towards your goal.
Later that year, I found out he had got an internship at Xero.
Last but not least, Summer of Tech was such a truly rewarding experience. I wouldn’t be working where I am at Sharesies without this program.
