First Ever: Design Bootcamp
This year with the help of the amazing team at Alphero, we gathered our top design students from around New Zealand to participate in a one day design bootcamp. Tasked with a project from real live clients, and interrupted throughout the day with “mini challenges” it was an exhilarating day for everyone!
Teams were split into groups of three and handed one of three challenges: designing a mobile app for a phone company, redesigning a smart ATM for a bank, and developing a website for a radio station.
The briefs were pretty strict, laying out set colour palettes, fonts and features that the clients had specified. For most students this was their first go at following a client brief, and curbing their creative flair was the biggest challenge of the day!
It was an awesome experience! The Alphero team were so welcoming and helpful. At university we don’t get many opportunities to work with real clients, so it was great to be able to further develop our skills in that area…The 30 minute design challenges were also a great asset to the day; They definitely helped to develop our abilities to think and design creatively, and quickly!
We’d like to give an enormous THANK YOU to Alphero & their amazing clients! Without your leadership, hard work and sponsorship the design bootcamp wouldn’t have been possible. It’s clear the students all learnt a lot throughout the process and now have a greater understanding around how to meet a client’s brief.
It’s early days, but we think the 1-day design bootcamp was an exceptionally awesome way to help design students understand what it’s like to work in a commercial environment. We’d love to repeat this event in 2017!
