Our premium student skills development event for code & design students in the programme is Hackfest, a 2 day app-building challenge for teams of SoT2016 students. They’re supported by industry mentors, and the challenge this year was to use an API or dataset, and build something cool in a weekend, e.g. a web/mobile app or data visualisation.

Here’s the profile of one of the teams from our Wellington Web Hackfest, held at Powershop on the 20th & 21st August:

Team SnackFest: Sairam, Grace, Bryan, Maria, and Alex

Lead Mentor: Garion from Silverstripe

App Name: Proper Snack

Team Snackfest wanted to investigate the issue potential home buyers face when looking at buying a new home.

They made an application that allows property buyers to easily identify where they can purchase a new home and what areas are cheap or costly. The user can enter a suburb name in the search box or click the suburb on the map, and information around cost and population numbers would appear.
Datasets & Tools: Google Map API, QU Homes (data), Python, JavaScript, J Query, HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap.
