WLG Hackfest – Team Spymarket
Our premium student skills development event for code & design students in the programme is Hackfest, a 2 day app-building challenge for teams of SoT2016 students. They’re supported by industry mentors, and the challenge this year was to use an API or dataset, and build something cool in a weekend, e.g. a web/mobile app or data visualisation.
Here’s the profile of one of the teams from our Wellington Web Hackfest, held at Powershop on the 20th & 21st August:
Team Spymarket: Jack, Patrick, Genevieve, Christiandel, and Simon
Lead Mentor: Sam from Sailthru/Carnival
App Name: Spymarket
Spymarket took on the challenge of helping their users (students) stick to their budgets when it came to supermarket shopping.
They designed an application which allowed users to compare the prices of grocery items across a variety of supermarket chains (PAK’nSAVE, Countdown, and New World).
Datasets: Website Scraping, and New World Private API
It was an excellent experience. My team members were extremely productive and got along well together. Our team mentor Sam was supportive all the way.
And here are the slides from Team Spymarket’s presentation.
Spymarket were awarded 1st prize by our judges!!! Awesome work team!
All the photos from the event are up on Facebook and there were a bunch of tweeted updates over the weekend to.
