Online Meet & Greet FAQs for Candidates
With online Meet & Greet coming up, we've got you covered with our ultimate guide comprised of FAQs, a checklist and top tips for the big event! Here is all the information you need to win over the employers at Meet & Greet.
Online Meet & Greet FAQs
Video conversations are awkward; I’m nervous about connecting with employers online. How do I prepare for this?
Remote job interviews are now a reality for any job seeker for the foreseeable future. We will have mock interview practice events happening BEFORE Meet & Greet, so you will get a chance to practice and get used to the format. Limit any distractions and find a quiet space to focus, with as minimal background distractions as possible. Have a bottle of water nearby to stay refreshed!
I’m anxious about the queuing process at the Online Meet & Greet; how will that work?
You can queue for multiple booths at once. You will have visibility on where you are in the queue. You can browse other booths while you wait. We are doing our best to ensure this is a good experience.
How will the “chat” work with employers at the online Meet & Greet?
It will be up to you to join a queue for the company/job you want to chat to. When it is your turn, the employer will invite you into a 1:1 video chat.
Will we need to write any cover letters for the Meet & Greet or Speed Interview process?
The “About You” section of your profile acts as your cover letter for all roles in Summer of Tech. Ensure that it covers all the things your potential employer needs to know about you!
Do I need business cards or my CV or portfolio?
No, you do not need business cards. Your CV and portfolio are visible on your Summer of Tech profile. Employers can go there to find out everything they need to know about you!
Can employers access our QR Code or some profile link during M&G?
Yes, we may include your QR code on your online M&G profile, but they can find your profile by searching for your name. Make sure the name and profile photo you use on both platforms is the same!
How do I stand out in a crowd of other candidates?
As boring as it sounds, be yourself! It will make the process smoother for you and your employers. If you're excited about a role, don't be afraid to show them! Employers are looking for someone enthusiastic, willing to learn, and wanting to learn.
Tips for candidates
Figure out who you want to talk to before the event (you get to choose which queues you join!)
Research roles and organisations, and be ready to make a great first impression
Prepare some questions to ask to show you’re genuinely interested in the opportunity
Be ready to record your impressions so you know which role(s) you’re most excited about
Have a positive opening statement/introduction. Practice it!
A checklist of things that you need to prepare:
Apply for roles! We recommend you apply for your top 15 roles. We are getting more roles listed every day, so keep checking the job site. You can switch your applications around any time. Don’t forget to read the eligibility criteria and application instructions carefully. Some employers have steps you need to follow and deadlines to meet!
Make a list and research the companies that you want to talk to! We will continuously update the event page with the list of participating employers.
Check your internet connection. A stable internet connection is crucial to have a great experience meeting and greet your future employers. We understand that connectivity is important, but not everyone is lucky enough to have solid and stable internet access.
Reminder, keep your meetings short. We suggest 3-5 minutes per conversation so that everyone gets a chance to meet employers and make an impression.
