Our premium student skills development event for code & design students in the programme is Hackfest, a 2 day app-building challenge for teams of SoT2017 students. They’re supported by industry mentors, and the challenge this year was to use an API or dataset, and build something cool in a weekend, e.g. a web/mobile app or data visualisation.

Here’s the profile of one of the teams from our Wellington Web Hackfest, held at Flux Federation on the 12th & 13th August 2017:

Team Weekend Artists

Team members: James (designer), Matt, Nanda, Michael, Hamish, our lead mentor was Lena, but this is Kate, a UX mentor in the photo.

App Name: Artchive NZ

What does it do? Our app creates a new way to discover New Zealand art and the colour palettes within.

What tools did you use to build it? We used the Digital NZ API & the imgur image recognition API. For the back-end we used node.js and git, front-end we used HTML/CSS & Javascript. For the design we used sketch and invision for prototyping and wireframes.

Anything else you’d like to share about your Hackfest experience?

We had a blast! All of the mentors were super helpful and supportive, it was a really awesome and creative environment to be in for two days. Our team really worked well together and adapted well to the agile development process.
