If you're after graduates, we suggest you jump in soon, because we are only 2 weeks out from our 2021/22 summer intern recruitment season, where we have almost 2,000 candidates very keen to get paid summer jobs. Below is a snapshot of information about our intern candidates, bootcamps, employers and in-demand skills as at 20 August 2021.

Summer Internship Candidates

So far we have close to 2,000 students and graduates from …

32 different NZ tertiary institutions

…with the highest representation from the Universities of Auckland, Victoria, Canterbury and AUT. Also strongly featuring candidates from Whitireia/Weltec, University of Otago, Massey University, Enspiral Dev Academy, Waikato, and Unitec.

We have a diverse range of qualifications, with (no surprises) Computer Science, Software Engineering and IT qualifications making the top 3. But we have a large number of commerce/marketing and design candidates. In terms of tech specialty: Data, Mechatronics and Cybersecurity are strong. To emphasise the range of qualifications, Psychology and Music feature, too!

We have students from 1st year to PhD level, from short courses to L-O-N-G courses. We usually see around 50% of students getting internships before their final year, this is a great way to invest in someone early, and help be the bridge between learning and earning. Here’s where candidates are up to, study-wise:

The power of our proactive search means you can find candidates who may not have heard of your organisation or technical skill requirements, but they have the right attitude and aptitude to become your next great employee! We’ve seen a consistent

80% retention rate for SoT interns

…it’s a great way to grow your team.

To help you find diverse candidates, we have a built-in “anonymised search” mode, so that you can remove names and photos and focus on skills and potential.

If you need interns, we have candidates keen to work in your region. We have heaps of motivated newbies ready to take up opportunities throughout NZ, and if your region isn’t here let us know and we will open it up as an option.

What about in-demand skills? So far, employers are seeking candidates with a desire to build

skills in 231 categories

Top of the list so far (for the 3rd year running) is Javascript, which is a desired skill for 47 internship roles. The next 4 skills are non-technical ones, proving that core skills are just as important to get a job in the tech industry: Team Work, Agile, Problem Solving and Verbal Communication.

In the 6 months since 1 March 2021, we have hosted 87 bootcamps, which are events delivered by our team and our sponsors, partners and industry volunteers throughout NZ.

SoT events are designed to help students build awareness, knowledge, practical tips and connection to topics that are in-demand in the NZ tech industry.

We’ve had…

3,467 event attendances, spread across 1,592 unique attendees

That’s an average of 3.3 hours of free professional development per person!

(That total doesn’t include our 2 day “Create Camp” hackathon)

Our events (as usual) focus on career, technical and core skills, with lots of opportunities for 1:1 “clinics” where students can get feedback from an industry mentor.

We currently have

100+ organisations seeking 300+ interns & graduates

This includes startups, SMEs, growth companies, corporates, public and private sector. We know that the more diverse the employer organisations and roles are, the better the chances of finding ideal candidates —> diversity For The Win!

We hope that all of these snapshots show why we are considered the most significant tech internship programme in Aotearoa (according to the Digital Skills Aotearoa Report 2021), and THE place to find fresh tech talent for your organisation.

There’s still time to join our 2021 programme! Peak summer intern recruitment season runs from 7th September to 6th October… but we will have intern and grad candidates available right up until 31 December. We’ll open for our 2022 grad programme in January… so now’s good!

We are always happy to talk in more detail, please contact the team if you want to know more!
