We hosted our first employer drop-in session recently; this was a chance to share insights and connect with our employer whānau. I shared some insights on wage trends for tech interns and graduates:

NZ Tech industry trends

  • 64% of NZ Tech employers plan to give employees a pay rise this year.

  • 91% of NZ Tech employers gave their staff a pay increase in 2021.

  • 20% of NZ Tech professionals consider moving overseas, and the primary motivator is money.

Factors in graduate candidate recruitment decisions

According to Talent Solutions' Student Pulse 2021, the main factors contributing to graduate candidates (across all sectors in NZ) are: 

1) Salary (43% vs 38% in 2020)

2) Reputation of the organisation

3) Job location

Though many of our intern candidates are in their final year or soon to graduate, the factors we see at play in their decision-making are broader:

  • Learning & development

  • Career opportunities

  • Salary

  • The reputation of the organisation

  • Degree-related work experience

  • Location

Summer of Tech 2022 Intern remuneration 

Average $25.78 (up 4% vs 2021)

Range $23.65-$31.97

(Note: this is based on 192 roles advertised and filled between 1 January-12 August 2022)

Summer of Tech 2022 Graduate remuneration

Average $29.31 (up 13% vs 2021)

Range $23.10-$38.46
