Summer of Tech Internship - Next Steps

Two people interacting online

With only one month left of my internship to go, I am relieved to know what my next steps are as a grad entering the tech field.

I want to ask the 2021 alumni a timely question.

Have you talked to your employer about what happens after your internship ends?

If there is any ambiguity surrounding the answer to this question and you want to stay on, it's time to talk to your manager about the next steps.

Although uncomfortable to bring up, rest assured you will gain clarity about your future.

This conversation is best for a video or phone call if you are working from home.

Communicating next steps with your manager:

  1. Book a meeting with them for when they are available, let them know what you want to discuss ahead of time.

  2. When you meet, be direct and inform your manager that you would like to stay on.

  3. Tell them why you are awesome and the value you will keep bringing to the company.

  4. Be polite and professional and thank them for their time and support - whatever their response.

  5. Afterwards, give yourself kudos (or ice cream) for initiating and navigating a courageous conversation.

Summer of Tech also has a guide for how to talk to your employer about staying on after your internship. Including how to deal with a yes or no response.

Whatever the outcome, you've got this.

This post is part of a series by our 2021 Marketing Intern, Yana Brewster. Keep an eye out - she will be continually posting as her internship journey progresses!
